What it is

Dark Lips Neutralization is a corrective permanent makeup technique designed for clients with naturally dark, purple, bluish or very uneven lip pigmentation. Before any color can be added, the existing darkness must be neutralized using skin-tone matching corrector pigments.

The process works similarly to color-correction in makeup: orange or peach-toned pigments are deposited into the lip tissue to cancel out the blue and purple undertones. Once the neutralization has healed, a lip color session can be layered on top to achieve the final look.

This technique typically requires 2–3 sessions for deep pigmentation—a neutralization session, a color session, and often a touch-up. The result is even, natural-looking lip color that would otherwise not be possible with standard Lip Blushing alone.

PRE-CARE ADVICE

Neutralization requires clean, hydrated lips

Follow all standard lip pre-care guidelines, plus the additional cold sore protocol.

LIP PREP
  • Hydrate lips with plain lip balm daily for 2 weeks prior.
  • No lip fillers for 4 weeks before your appointment.
  • No waxing or threading near the lip area for 1 week prior.
COLD SORE PROTOCOL (REQUIRED)
  • Anyone with a history of cold sores MUST take antiviral medication starting 3 days before and continuing 3 days after the procedure.
  • Obtain a prescription for Valacyclovir from your doctor before booking.
MEDICATIONS & LIFESTYLE
  • No blood thinners or aspirin 48 hours prior.
  • No alcohol 24 hours before.
  • No caffeine the morning of your appointment.
DAY OF PROCEDURE

Come with bare lips and photo references

Your artist will assess your natural lip color in person and customize the corrector shade accordingly.

ARRIVAL NOTES
  • Arrive with completely bare lips—no balm, liner or color.
  • Good lighting photos of your natural lip color are helpful.
  • Allow extra time—this session is longer than standard lip work.
AFTER-CARE (NEUTRALIZATION PROTOCOL)

Corrector pigments heal differently than color pigments

The healed neutralization layer may look orange or peach—this is correct and intended. Color is layered over it in the next session.

FIRST 7 DAYS
  • Blot gently with clean cotton to absorb lymph—do not rub.
  • Apply thin aftercare ointment as instructed.
  • Keep lips dry and free of food irritants (spicy, salty, acidic) for 5 days.
BEFORE YOU BOOK

Three details people skim past

Small choices upstream prevent surprises on procedure day— especially around prior pigment, stimulants, and comfort planning.

Multi-session processCold sore historySkin tone
  1. 1
    This is a multi-session process

Achieving even, beautiful lip color on dark lips cannot be done in one session. The neutralization must fully heal before color is layered. Expect a minimum of 2 appointments, often 3 for deeper pigmentation.

  2. 2
    Cold sore history is critical

The trauma of any lip procedure can trigger cold sore outbreaks. If you have any history of oral herpes, antiviral medication is not optional—it is required for your safety.

  3. 3
The healed neutralizer will look orange

After the first session heals, your lips will have an orange or peach hue. This is exactly what is supposed to happen—it is the corrector layer doing its job. The lip color session follows once healing is complete.
