What it is

PMU Removal uses a saline-based solution—rather than laser—to draw unwanted pigment out of the skin. The saline creates osmosis through the skin, pulling the deposited pigment up and out as the treatment area heals over the following weeks.

Saline removal is preferred over laser for cosmetic pigments (brows, lips, eyeliner) because laser can cause unpredictable reactions with iron oxide pigments, sometimes causing them to turn darker or change color. Saline is a safer and more controlled approach for PMU.

Complete removal is rarely guaranteed. The realistic goal is significant lightening—enough to allow new PMU work over the top, or to reduce the appearance of unwanted tattooing to a level that is manageable.

PRE-CARE ADVICE

Prepare your skin before removal

The treatment area must be free of active irritation and out of direct sun before each removal session.

SKIN PREP
  • No Retinol, acids or exfoliating products for 2 weeks before each session.
  • No sun exposure or tanning on the treatment area for 2 weeks prior.
  • The treatment area must be free of active breakouts, irritation or infection.
MEDICATIONS
  • No blood thinners or aspirin 48 hours before.
  • No alcohol 24 hours before your appointment.
DAY OF PROCEDURE

Come clean and with realistic expectations

Arrive with the treatment area completely bare. Removal is a gradual process—results are assessed session by session.

ARRIVAL NOTES
  • No makeup, moisturizer or SPF on the treatment area.
  • Current photos of your existing PMU are helpful for tracking progress.
AFTER-CARE (REMOVAL PROTOCOL)

Post-removal care is critical

The treated area will crust and peel. This is the removal process working. Picking the scab disrupts the pigment extraction.

DAYS 1–14
  • Keep the area dry and do not pick, peel or scratch the treated skin.
  • Apply aftercare ointment as directed to support healing.
  • Keep sun away from the treatment area for a full month after the session.
BEFORE YOU BOOK

Three details people skim past

Small choices upstream prevent surprises on procedure day— especially around prior pigment, stimulants, and comfort planning.

Realistic goalsSession spacingPigment type
  1. 1
    Complete removal is not guaranteed

PMU removal is not like erasing a drawing. Very deep or very saturated pigment can be lightened significantly but may never disappear completely. We will be honest about what we can realistically achieve during your consultation.

  2. 2
    Session spacing is non-negotiable

Each removal session must be followed by a minimum 4–6 week healing period before the next session. Speeding up the process risks scarring and actually makes removal less effective.

  3. 3
    Dark pigments and prior corrections

Thick, dark or very old PMU—especially work that was done over previous corrections—may require more sessions and may not fully resolve. Assess the existing work together with your artist before committing to a removal plan.

STUDIO NOTE

Removal is the beginning of a conversation, not a one-session solution. Book a consultation first so we can look at your existing work and give you an honest timeline.
